Jokowi's Move to IKN Delayed Due to Incomplete Infrastructure

Trending 5 months ago

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko Widodo or Jokowi announced the postponement of his office relocation to the new capital of Nusantara or IKN in Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan, citing unfinished infrastructure as the reason.

“Is the water infrastructure ready? Is the electricity infrastructure ready? Is the area ready? If they are ready, I’ll move,” he said after handing over humanitarian aid at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta on Monday, July 8.

He confirmed receiving a report from Public Works Minister Basuki Hadimuljono that the construction of his office at IKN is not yet complete. He had originally planned to move in July 2024, with operations starting in parallel with the completion of the first phase of construction.

The government also planned to hold the Independence Day ceremony on August 17 this year at the IKN.

Previously, Head of the IKN Infrastructure Development Task Force, Danis Sumadilaga, said that the presidential office construction reached 92% completion. The task force targeted the project to finish by the second week of July to accommodate the August 17th celebration.

Danis explained that the Garuda wing blades had been installed and completed about three days ago. At present, the task force is focused on installing the remaining right and left sections.

“Rain and potential lightning strikes are a concern due to the high altitude,” Danis said when met at the Public Works Ministry Complex on Friday, July 5. “Hopefully it will be finished next week, depending on the weather.”

In addition to Jokowi's office, Danis expected to complete the Palace area, the Sumbu Kebangsaan area, Memorial Park, and the Beranda Nusantara by month’s end. Other buildings, such as the Presidential Secretariat and the Ministry of State Secretariat, can also be partially functional.
