TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi released humanitarian aid packages to Papua New Guinea (PNG)and Afghanistan. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) coordinated the delivery, which departed from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta on Monday, July 8.

“We need to help our brothers and sisters affected by disasters, so today we are sending aid to those in need, both in Papua New Guinea and Afghanistan,” he said.

The decision to support Papua New Guinea followed a coordination meeting led by Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy on Monday, July 1.

In response to the landslide disaster in Enga Province on May 24, the Indonesian government would provide PNG with approximately Rp18 billion in health and logistical assistance funded by BNPB's Ready Funds (DSP). According to the agency’s data, the landslide resulted in roughly 670 fatalities and displaced over 1,250 people.

The aid packages for PNG include refugee tents, family tents, basic food packages, ready-to-eat meals, instant noodles, rice, mineral water, hygiene kits, sleeping pads/mattresses, 5KVA/portable generators, solar lamps, cooking utensils, medicines, and blankets.

The Health Ministry also contributed additional medical supplies, food specifically for pregnant women and toddlers, anti-malarial medication, hygiene kits, and water purifiers.

Meanwhile, the President explained that humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan consists of 10 essential items worth Rp17.5 billion. This aid is in response to the October 2023 disaster, which caused many deaths and displacements.

“We hope this aid can help ease the burden on our brothers and sisters in Papua New Guinea and Afghanistan and support their recovery efforts,” Jokowi concluded.
