TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi congratulated Dick Schoof upon his appointment as the new Prime Minister of the Netherlands. Schoof succeeds Mark Rutte who has led the Dutch government since 2010.
“I look forward to deepening our nations' strong and enduring partnership,” he said in an official statement on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, July 8.
Schoof, a seasoned bureaucrat with prior experience leading the Dutch Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD), assumed the Prime Minister position after a coalition agreement in May sidelined the candidacy of anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders. This coalition includes the People's Party of Freedom and Democracy (PFFD) led by Mark Rutte and the centrist party, Nieuw Sociaal Contract.
While Wilders secured victory in last year's elections, they will not participate in the government. However, several figures from Wilders' Party for Freedom secured ministerial positions in Schoof's cabinet. The new Dutch government was sworn in on July 2, 2024.
The Netherlands is one of Indonesia's crucial partners in Europe. The Netherlands is Indonesia’s largest trading and investment partner.
Jokowi and PM Mark Rutte held a bilateral meeting in New Delhi, India, on September 9, 2024. Discussions encompassed development, economic matters, Indonesia's application to join the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and cooperation between ASEAN and the Netherlands.
According to the Indonesian Trade Ministry, total trade between Indonesia and the Netherlands from January to July 2023 reached US$2.73 billion. During this period, Indonesia's exports to the Netherlands were recorded at US$2.17 billion, while imports amounted to US$559.60 million. This resulted in a trade surplus of US$1.61 billion in favor of Indonesia.
