TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian tennis player Aldila Sutjiadi and her American mitra Asia Muhammad advanced to the round of 16 at Wimbledon 2024 after defeating the Russian pair of Elena Vesnina and Diana Shnaider 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 on Sunday, July 7.

"It was a difficult match, the frequent rain in London made the grass court very slippery," Aldila said in a written statement on Monday.

Aldila/Asia won the first set 6-2, but Elena/Diana tied the match in the second set 6-3. The match was postponed because the court was deemed too slippery due to rain. Aldila said the pair used the momentum of the delay to evaluate and improve their game in the third set the next day, playing with confidence to win the set and the match 6-3.

In the round of 16, Aldila/Asia will face the women's doubles pair of Timea Babos of Hungary and Nadiia Kichenok of Ukraine. Weather permitting, the match will be played on Monday at 18:30.

"Physically and mentally, we are very ready to face them, the biggest challenge right now is the uncertain weather," said Aldila.

Aldila and Asia's victory received praise and support from Indonesian tennis fans. For Aldila, the support of all the Indonesian people is very important to boost her fighting spirit.
