TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President-elect Prabowo Subianto pledged to safeguard public funds and ensure that they benefit the nation and society. The Defense Minister emphasized the crucial role of the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) in overseeing the management of the state budget (APBN).
“The BPK must tighten its oversight in the future. We don't want any leaks or unaccounted-for public funds,” he said ahead of a meeting with President Joko Widodo or Jokowi at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday, July 8. “We must safeguard every rupiah and ensure that it benefits the nation and its people.”
The Gerindra patron chief’s comments came in response to Jokowi's statement at this morning's event on the 2023 Financial Audit Results Report, where the state head expressed his confidence in his successor's commitment to following the BPK's recommendations.
“So that public funds are well-utilized, transparently managed, and held accountable,” the President said.
At the same event, Jokowi requested support from all sectors of the nation for a smooth government transition. He underscored the importance of this process for maintaining government stability. As widely reported, he will hand over the reins to his Defense Minister in October 2024.
Unlike the transfer of power from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) to Jokowi back in 2014, Prabowo and Jokowi's son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, opted not to establish a umum transition team. Following his 2014 election victory, Jokowi who was paired with Jusuf Kalla formed a dedicated transition team.
In contrast, Prabowo opted for a synchronization task force composed solely of his internal party members. The task force was led by Gerindra’s executive board chairman Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, with the party’s secretary Ahmad Muzani serving as deputy chairman. Other members included Thomas Djiwandono, Budisatrio Djiwandono, and Prasetyo Hadi.
