TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia strongly condemned the latest Israeli attack on a school operated by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza on Saturday, July 6, 2024, which resulted in at least 16 fatalities and over 75 injuries.
“Indonesia strongly condemns Israel's barbaric attack on al-Jaouni school in the Nuseirat refugee camp operated by UNRWA in Central Gaza (6/7),” the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared in a social media statement on Monday, July 8, 2024.
According to the Gaza Government Media Office on July 6, at least 16 Palestinians were killed and more than 75 others were injured in the attack, as reported by Al Jazeera.
Indonesia’s statement criticized Israel's continued "atrocities and violations of international law", causing civilian casualties to keep rising. Additionally, Indonesia questioned the inaction of the United Nations (UN) and Israel's allies in addressing the situation.
“Are such atrocities still not enough for the UN Security Council and countries supporting Israel to take firm actions against Israel?” the ministry wrote.
The al-Jaouni School operated by UNRWA became the latest educational facility targeted by Israel since the October 2023 offensive began. UNRWA reported that the school served as a shelter for nearly 2,000 internally displaced persons.
The agency further stated that since the offensive's start, over half, or approximately 190 of its facilities have been struck, resulting in 520 reported deaths and nearly 1,600 injuries, with many victims being women and children.
The Israeli military confirmed an airstrike on the school, claiming it was used as a Hamas command center, according to a statement last Saturday cited from the Times of Israel. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini refuted this claim, stating it's a recurring justification used by Israel.
“These are claims that I take very seriously. It is exactly why I have repeatedly called for independent investigations to ascertain the facts & identify those responsible for attacks on UN premises or their misuse,” Lazzarini said in his social media statement.
Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023, have resulted in at least 38,153 fatalities and 87,828 injuries, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The estimated death toll in Israel from the Hamas-led offensive is 1,139, based on an Al Jazeera tally using official Israeli figures. Dozens of Israelis reportedly remain hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
