BNI to Open Branch in Sydney, Eyeing 3 Market Segments

Trending 5 months ago

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. (BNI) will soon open a branch in Sydney, Australia. The state-owned bank's President Director Royke Tumilaar made the revelation during a joint hearing with the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission VI at the Parliament Complex on Monday, July 8, 2024.

BNI's Australian office is located in the Sales Force Tower, a Sydney landmark.

"We have received permission to open a branch in Sydney. We will have the opening ceremony soon. This was approved by APRA (Australian Prudential Regulation Authority) on May 27," Royke said.

He said BNI is the first Indonesian bank to be approved by APRA. The opening of the Sydney branch is also motivated by the growing number of Indonesian companies expanding into Australia, including through acquisitions.

Royke said there are at least three main objectives for BNI once it begins operations in Australia. These include providing bilateral loans, helping Indonesian companies expand into Australia, and reaching out to the diaspora.

In general, the three sasaran markets for BNI in Australia are the wholesale market for corporates and SMEs in the form of loans to the diaspora, and the retail segment in the form of diaspora savings.

"Our three main objectives are to provide bilateral loans, syndication, and to enable more Indonesian companies to expand, as well as to support the diaspora with diaspora loans," Royke said.
