TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati emphasized that heavy rain in the dry season is not a form of anomaly.
Dwikorita said this condition is natural for Indonesia, considering the country’s geographical location between two continents, namely Australia and Asia, and two oceans, namely the Pacific and Indian Ocean.
"This causes Indonesia to have two different seasons, namely the rainy and dry seasons," said Dwikorita, quoted from a written statement on Wednesday, July 10, 2024.
According to the BMKG Head, a dry season does not mean a complete absence of rain, but rather less rainfall that occurs for at least thirty days in a row. The dry season itself does not occur simultaneously across Indonesia and lasts for different durations between regions.
Even though the dry season has begun in parts of Indonesia, he said, it does not always indicate a dry and hot climate since climate diversity in Indonesia is not only influenced by seasonal conditions.
Dwikorita said many factors influence climate diversity in Indonesia, namely dunia factors such as the El Nino/La Nina phenomenon, regional factors such as the Madden Julian Oscillation, warming sea surface temperatures around Indonesia, and local factors such as land breezes and sea breezes. "A weather event is generally the result of the interaction of these various factors," he said.
The recent heavy rain that occurs in Banten, West Java, Jakarta, and Maluku occurs because of the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) phenomenon. Equatorial Rossby Waves, and Kelvin Waves.
"In the last few days, there has been an active MJO weather phenomenon around the Indian Ocean, influencing the formation of rain clouds, especially in western Indonesia. From July 3 to 6, 2024, MJO, Rossby Equatorial, and Kelvin atmospheric waves are active in central and southern parts of Indonesia," said Dwikorita.
This MJO phenomenon has been detected since June 28, so BMKG has issued an early warning for heavy rain. "Areas such as southern Sumatra, Java (including the Greater Jakarta), Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and southern Papua experience atmospheric conditions that support the formation of rain clouds that increase the potential for rainfall," he said.
Furthermore, Dwikorita said the type of rain in Indonesia is also influenced by topographic conditions, which have lots of mountains, valleys, and beaches.
Meanwhile, BMKG Deputy for Meteorology Guswanto said that based on the latest weather analysis for the upcoming week, rainfall potential is still expected to rise despite the start of the dry season. From July 8 to 10, 2024, the rain will potentially occur in most areas of Sumatra, western Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, North Maluku and Papua. Meanwhile, from July 11 to 14, 2024, rainfall will occur in northern Sumatra, most of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, North Maluku and Papua.
"Even though several regions in Indonesia have entered the dry season, we urge the public to remain vigilant and anticipate the extreme weather potential, including brief thunderstorms, small tornadoes, and hail,” he said.
