TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian air navigation services provider, AirNav Indonesia, conducted a trial for a cross-border user-preferred route (UPR) between Indonesian and Australian airspaces on Monday morning, August 5, 2024.
"This trial is a form of AirNav Indonesia's commitment to supporting the country’s aviation industry to become more efficient and environmentally friendly," said AirNav Indonesia CEO Polana B. Pramesti in a written statement.
UPR is a free-route airspace concept that allows airlines flexibility to determine their own most fuel-efficient routes by considering air traffic density, wind speed and direction, potential turbulence, air temperature, and aircraft type and performance.
AirNav Indonesia has run the UPR program in Indonesian airspace (Jakarta FIR and Ujung Pandang FIR) since October 5, 2023. This cross-border program or Cross FIR Boundary UPR is intended to accommodate the flexibility of cross-border flights.
AirNav Indonesia collaborated with Australia’s air navigation service provider Airservices Australia in conducting the cross-border UPR trial. "Together with 4 International Airlines, namely Garuda Indonesia, Singapore Airlines, Qantas, and Air New Zealand, we collaborate and work together in the cross-border free-route program or Cross FIR Boundary UPR, commencing on August 5, 2024," said Polana.
This program, said Polana, is proof of commitment from AirNav Indonesia, Airservices Australia, Airways New Zealand, and CAAS (Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore), in improving the efficiency, safety, and comfort of flight navigation, as well as environmentally friendly airspace in the Asia Pacific regional airspace.
"Hopefully the trial will be carried out successfully and be beneficial for all airlines flying in the Asia Pacific airspace," said Polana.
