5 Facts About the Recently Deceased Noriko Ohara, the Voice Behind Doraemon's Nobita

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Voice actor Noriko Ohara, the woman behind the beloved and iconic character Nobita in the popular anime series Doraemon, passed away on July 12, 2024, at the age of 88. This news was confirmed by her agency, 81 Produce.

On July 23, Anime Corner quoted 81 Produce as saying, "Our actress Noriko Ohara (real name: Noriko Tobe) died on July 12, 2024, at the age of 88 after suffering from a long illness despite medical treatment."

As per the wishes of her family, the funeral was held privately among relatives. "We sincerely appreciate the kindness shown during her life and respectfully inform you of her passing," 81 Produce wrote.

  1. Seiyuu

Noriko Ohara was born in Tokyo pada October 2, 1935. She began her career as a seiyuu, the Japanese word for voice actress, in the 1950s. Her career took off after she became the voice of Nobita Nobi, a character in the globally loved anime Doraemon.

  1. Nobita

Since lending her voice to Nobita in 1979, Noriko has been credited with giving the character a unique life and personality. Nobita, the main character who recounts the adventures of a robot cat from the future, is very popular with children and adults around the world.

  1. 50 years of Nobita 

Noriko voiced Nobita until 2005 when she was replaced by Megumi Ohara. However, the significance of her iconic role has not been lost. This includes the hundreds of Doraemon movies, theatrical adaptations, and original video animations that the franchise has produced over its 50-year history.

  1. Other Anime

In addition to Nobita, Noriko has voiced many other characters throughout her career, including Conan from Future Boy Conan; Doronjo from Yatterman; Peter from Heidi, Girl of the Alps; Oyuki from Urusei Yatsura, and many more. As per Tokyo Weekender, she has also voice-acted in the Japanese dubbed version of several Western films and cartoons such as Valerie Brown in Josie and the Pussycats, Penelope Pitstop in The Perils of Penelope Pitshop and Miss Bianca in The Rescuers.

  1. Accolades 

In 2007, Noriko won the Achievement Award at the first Seiyu Awards. In 2013, she won the Synergy Award for elevating the overall appeal of voice acting. Noriko was an early pioneer in the industry, paving the way for many other aspiring voice actors.
