TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, expressed profound gratitude to Indonesia for its steadfast commitment and significant contributions to United Nations Peacekeeping. He acknowledged the service and sacrifice of Indonesian military and police personnel deployed under the UN flag.
Indonesia's involvement in UN peacekeeping began in 1957 with its participation in the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) in Sinai, Egypt. Currently, Indonesia ranks as the sixth-largest contributor to UN Peacekeeping, providing 2,715 uniformed personnel, including 183 women, to various peace operations.
"Indonesia's contributions are vital to our dunia efforts to maintain peace and security," said Lacroix at the conclusion of his three-day visit to Jakarta on Wednesday. "As a major contributor of troops to UN peacekeeping missions, Indonesia's dedication and professionalism are highly valued."
Indonesia's largest contingent is deployed with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), working in challenging conditions to uphold the mission's mandate. Additionally, Indonesian peacekeepers serve in the United Nations Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) and the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), among others.
Lacroix also highlighted Indonesia's long-standing support for UN peace operations in countries like Cambodia, Liberia, and Haiti. He praised Indonesia for its support of the United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit held in June 2024 at UN Headquarters, emphasizing the crucial role of UN Police in peace operations. He also acknowledged Indonesia's efforts in hosting training courses and workshops for peacekeepers across Asia.
Efforts to increase the number of women in UN missions were particularly noted. "I look forward to welcoming many more Indonesian women, as well as men, into UN Peacekeeping over the coming years," said Lacroix. He commended Police First Sergeant Renita Rismayanti, who was named the 2023 UN Woman Police Officer of the Year.
During his visit, Lacroix met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi, among other officials, discussing potential areas for further cooperation in training, digital transformation of peacekeeping, and promoting female peacekeepers.
