Trending 7 months ago

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The level of safety in a nation is not just determined by crime rates. Political stability, peaceful international relations, and inclusive social and economic policies also play a crucial role.

Produced by the international think-tank Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), the Global Peace Index (GPI) measures the relative peacefulness of nations and regions using 23 indicators divided into three core categories: social safety, ongoing domestic and international conflicts, and militarization. The Nordic countries in Europe consistently rank among the safest.

Based on the latest GPI report, here are the top 8 safest countries in the world in 2024:

1. Iceland (Score: 1.112)

Iceland has held the top spot for 14 consecutive years. This nation enjoys an exceptionally low crime rate, strong public trust in police, and a deep respect for equality. Notably, Icelandic police don't even carry firearms while on duty.

2. Ireland (Score: 1.303)

Ireland is one of the wealthiest, most developed, and happiest nations in the world. Its commitment to peace is evident in its rising position on the list.

3. Austria (Score: 1.313)

Austria offers a high level of safety, although peaceful protests are occasionally held. Serious crimes like pickpocketing and terrorism are rare.

4. New Zealand (Score: 1.323)

This beautiful country boasts a very low crime rate. Similar to Iceland, New Zealand police generally operate without carrying firearms. Additionally, they have strong laws protecting freedom of speech.

5. Singapore (Score: 1.339)

Singapore takes the crown as the safest country in Asia. The nation enforces strict gun control, resulting in a remarkably low crime rate. Even minor offenses come with harsh penalties, contributing to a highly compliant society.

6. Switzerland (Score: 1.350)

Switzerland is renowned for its peaceful and stable political environment. Their commitment to neutrality has historically kept them out of major conflicts.

7. Portugal (Score: 1.372)

Portugal is making significant strides towards becoming a safer nation. They have increased the number of armed police officers to combat crime rates.

8. Denmark (Score: 1.382)

Denmark rounds out the list of the world's safest countries in 2024. The nation is considered exceptionally safe for everyone day or night. This strong sense of security is attributed to a high level of shared responsibility and a deep-rooted respect for equality. Additionally, low corruption levels further solidify trust within Danish society.
